Artificial turf installation, step by step
From tearing out the old lawn to the final clean-up — here's the full sequence.
1Demo the old grass or weeds
The existing lawn, weeds, and old material are removed from the area, so the new turf starts on a bare, clean base.
2Dig out 3–4 inches, remove the roots, and level the yard
The area is excavated three to four inches deep, all roots are pulled out, and the ground is raked and graded as level as possible.
3Add and compact the base material
A blend of crushed gravel, sand, and polymeric sand is spread evenly across the yard and compacted down into a firm, stable base.
4Install the weed barrier
A woven weed barrier is rolled over the compacted base and secured, so nothing grows up through the new turf.
5Install and nail the new turf
The new turf is rolled out, trimmed to the edges of the yard, and nailed down around the perimeter so it sits flat and stays put.
6Add sand for weight
Turf sand is broadcast across the lawn and brushed down into the fibers, adding weight so the turf won't shift or lift.
7Clean up and haul away the debris
Old sod, trimmings, and leftover material are bagged up and hauled away, leaving you a finished yard with nothing left behind.
